Club Reports: Alice Restaurant, Bangarang, Hail Mary (Toronto) By King Bob in Club Reports November 30, 2024 This is the weekend for our annual visit to Buffalo for the “World’s Largest Disco” event which we will report on in tomorrow’s article. But with this being Thanksgiving weekend in the United States, it was hundreds of dollars cheaper to fly into Canada and take a train to Buffalo than to fly into Buffalo itself. (You see, Canada had their Thanksgiving holiday in October!) By now you know that if we’re traveling we like to share entertainment choices in the various cities or ships we’re on. From Toronto Pearson International Airport there is a train every 15 minutes or so into downtown’s Union Station which is where my hotel was located. Someday we might actually have train service from Orlando International Airport to Universal Studios and Walt Disney World! when Brightline constructs their extension from OIA to Tampa. There’s no better way to see the nightlife of any city and make new friends than to do a “Pub Crawl”. When researching club options a few weeks ago we discovered that Toronto is a big Hip Hop city with many of the larger places such as Rebel and CODA playing that genre when no big name DJ is playing. So a pub crawl was a great solution to finding more local options. Our Pub Crawl group began at Alice Restaurant. These two “Proudly Made In Canada” ladies were serving the drinks at this first stop. This is a small place with no DJ but served as a meeting place for our tour group to assemble as a Top 40 hits prerecorded track played in the background. It was soon time to move on to our next stop, Bangarang. (Not sure of any relation to the Skrillex (USA) hit from 2012.) One of the cool things about doing a pub crawl is that you visit places frequented by locals, not by tourists. This particular pub crawl operates every Friday and Saturday night and the club/bar choices vary each time. Last night we were in the “Little Italy” section of downtown Toronto. Two of the tour stops included discounted drink specials and I got my signature Tito’s & Tonic but this stop also included a free shot. Not sure what it was but it was pretty delicious. There is a long bar upfront and then this area with a DJ booth towards the rear. DJ Grump (CDN) was in the booth during our visit. A few minutes after we arrived to an empty floor, a few people began dancing. And a few minutes after that, mayhem! The music was Hip Hop initially but as soon as he switched it over to a mix of Top 40, EDM and even some Disco, that’s when the dance floor got busy. Even a couple of bar crawl strangers can become friends when the DJ plays some Taylor Swift (USA). Really fun place that we would have never found on our own! Our third and final stop last night was this place called Hail Mary. It was another second floor venue you wouldn’t even notice if you were just walking by. Entry here also has you immediately greeted by this bar at the front. And like at Bangarang, a DJ booth towards the rear. Here we found DJ Hedspin (CDN) in the booth delivering the tunes. The dance floor went from this….. To this in a matter of minutes when our group got on! Our pub crawl group included several Toronto locals plus some New Yorkers, a couple guys from the UK and a couple from friendly Manitoba. The music here too was mostly Top 40, EDM and Disco with some Hip Hop classics. Here are some of the drink prices. Keep in mind that Americans get around a 30% discount when Canadian dollar prices are converted to U.S. dollars. It was an awesome night! Anyone coming to Toronto should check out Pub Crawl Toronto here. As you can see, a good time was had by all.
